Did you know?   Wisconsin has been named the second best cycling environment in the US.

 unique areas to explore, state Tourism Department info., and often a beverage to

The roads in our part of the state are scenic. Towns and villages are quaint and close together.

While there are many wonderful scenic areas for biking in Western Wisconsin on quiet
back roads, you might want to CHECK OUT SOME OF THESE BIKE TRAILS

Chippewa River State Recreational Trail (Chippewa Falls)
Distance: 23 miles. Eau Claire to Dunnville. The trails in Carson Park add 1 mile.  Hard-surfaced rail bed. Plunges deep into the wild bottomland along the meandering Chippewa River.
Trailhead Locations: Carson Park, 1 mile north of Clairmont Ave (Hwy 12) in Eau Claire; or the wayside park on Hwy 85, 2.5 miles west of the I-94/Hwy 27/Hwy 85 EauClaire/Mondovi exit.
Fees: Daily or annual State Trail Pass for ages 16 and over.

Elroy-Sparta State Trail (Sparta)
Distance: 32 miles. Bike on the abandoned Chicago & Northwestern Railroad bed and passes through three rock tunnels. The Kendall and Wilton tunnels are ¼ mile long and the Norwalk tunnel is ¾ mile long. The trail is covered with limestone screenings and provides a smooth riding surface. The bridges are covered with planks and are guarded with railings
Trailhead Locations: The trail may be entered at the Elroy Commons in Elroy or ½ mile northwest of Elroy on Hwy. 71, or continue on Hwy. 71 to the Village of Kendall - the Trail Headquarters is at the old Kendall Depot, or enter at Wilton or Norwalk on Hwy. 71, or the Sparta Chamber Depot at 111 Milwaukee St., Sparta, WI.

Gandy Dancer State Trail, St. Croix Falls to Danbury  (47 miles)
Stay at  St. Croix River Inn,  Wissahickon Country Inn or Canyon Road Inn  
Crushed limestone.  Trailhead at the Polk County Visitors Center

Great River State Trail  (24 miles)
Crushed limestone through wildlife refuges along the Mississippi, connecting Onalaska and Trempealeau. The trail is in Wisconsin's scenic Coulee Region, part of the Driftless Area that was untouched by glaciers during the last Ice Age. Visitors to the Great River trail will enjoy the changing wetlands of the Mississippi River backwaters, 500-foot bluffs, hardwood forests, unique sand prairies and oak savannahs.

River Falls Tour  (21 miles)

La Crosse River State Trail   (21.5 miles)
Crushed limestone connecting the Elroy-Sparta State Trail and the Great River State Trail, which goes to Trempealeau. Passes through Bangor and West Salem.

Stagecoach Tour  (29 miles)
Stay at  Otter Creek Inn, Tufts' Mansion,  Brambleberry B&B, 
or  Augusta Victorian Rose.
Mostly easy with a few moderately steep hills. Trailhead in Augusta just off of 12/27 on
Co G in the parking lot behind The Wood Shed antique store.

Trempealeau County Bicycle Loop
The nation's largest connected bicycle loop system with 382 miles of paved back roads, averaging only three cars per hour. The St. Paul Pioneer Press: "best road bicycling in the Upper Midwest." Fourteen loops ranging from 15 to 30 miles
through 11 cities and villages all available on a clearly marked map. Travel through beautiful countryside consisting of rolling hills, deep valleys, high bluffs, Amish farms, Mississippi River views and spectacular panoramic ridge top views. Bicyclists, motorcyclists and motorists alike love the scenic winding back roads of this area. One of the most thrilling rides for motorcyclists is on State Hwy. 108 from West Salem through the Mindoro Cut to Melrose.    Hundreds of friendly area residents offer assistance to bicyclists designated by blue bicycle signs posted at the roadside.  This non-glaciated region along the Mississippi river is ideal for family and sport road bicyclists.

Starts just north of Rice Lake on Cty. SS. Longest trail in WI. is well marked.  
Part of the 1,000 mile Ice Age National Scenic Trail

*  Classifies state and county roads throughout WI in terms of 
bicycling conditions. 
*  Identifies recreational bicycle trails and mountain bike facilities.

*  Town roads are not rated for their bicycling conditions, 
 but are identified with their road names.
*  Wisconsin Department of Transportation in partnership with the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin (BFW)  produced this "new and improved" version of the Wisconsin Bicycle Map. 
*  BFW  distributes this map and works with bicycle shops in Wisconsin to distribute these maps. 
*  All eight maps can be purchased as a set of 4 back-to-back maps.

Maps can be purchased by region (Northern Wisconsin, Western Wisconsin, Central Wisconsin, and Northeast/Southeast Wisconsin), or as complete set of four back-to-back maps.

Wisconsin County Bike Maps
WisDOT also has downloadable bike maps for each of Wisconsin's 72 counties.
